Believe it or not, in some states a couple can legally marry themselves with no formal officiant. In other states, the rules are more strict as only officiants ordained within that state can legally perform ceremonies there. The state of Nevada has its own guidelines and when you're planning your big day here, it's good to do your research.
The wedding industry is very a lucrative business in Nevada and therefore the state is very inclusive of whom they accept ordination. The following types of people can legally perform marriage ceremonies in Nevada:
- Any ordained minister in good standing with his denomination may perform marriages, as long as that denomination is incorporated or organized or established in the State of Nevada. Ministers are required to complete a complicated procedure to obtain a certificate of permissions to perform marriages.
- All judicial officers (Judges) of the State of Nevada.
- Chaplains of the Armed Forces.
The party who performed the wedding is responsible for returning the completed license to the Recorder's Office within 10 days after the ceremony.
Most counties don't require the officiant to provide their ordination information, however it's always safe to check with the local office at the time you apply for your certificate. Whomever you decide to help make your ceremony special, make sure they will be legally recognized by the state of Nevada. Also be sure to discuss with them other details such as fees, expected donations, choice of ceremony and sending in the license to be recorded. Putting all of the legal issues in order beforehand will leave your mind carefree and focused on each other, on that most important of days.
